Cannes 2026: Alia Bhatt’s Wearable Canvas and the Magic of Indian Hand-Painting

When fashion meets art, magic happens on the red carpet. At the Cannes Film Festival 2026, Bollywood icon Alia Bhatt chose to kick off her campaign not just in high fashion, but in a breathtaking tribute to home-grown Indian artistry.

Styled by the visionary Rhea Kapoor, Alia turned heads in a stunning, custom designed gown featuring a sculpted bodice and a voluminous skirt. But what truly made this ensemble the talk of the global fashion world wasn't just its striking 1950s silhouette it was the fact that the entire dress served as a wearable canvas, meticulously hand-painted by Indian artist Basuri Chokshi.

For us at Design Dhaga, where we live and breathe the beauty of hand-crafted textiles, this moment on the global stage is a massive victory for artisanal craftsmanship. Here is the story behind the viral look that took 110 hours of pure dedication to create.
The Vision: Bringing the French Riviera to Life
The conceptualization of the look began when stylist Rhea Kapoor approached Basuri Chokshi with a unique brief: capture the romantic essence of the French Riviera for Alia’s debut look at Cannes.
Basuri, a self-taught artist with 15 years of rich experience in creating bespoke murals and luxury wall coverings, dove into deep research. Her goal? To translate the sunlit coastlines, lavender fields, and atmospheric romance of the Riviera into her own signature style.
Once the initial digital concept was approved, the raw structure of the dress—featuring angular cups, a dramatic drop waist, and layers of ombre dyed silk organza and tulle was crafted by designer Yash Patil of That Antique Piece. Then, it was time for the magic to happen.

110 Hours of Pure Artistry

Working directly onto the semi stitched gown, Basuri spent a grueling yet joyful week hand-painting every single detail. It took over 110 man-hours of intricate brushwork to achieve the final look.

Every stroke on the delicate silk organza and tulle captured a dreamy landscape. Speaking to the media about the masterpiece, Basuri shared:

"Each brushstroke reflects the Riviera's effortless elegance, cinematic romance, and timeless sophistication where natural beauty and cultural refinement exist seamlessly together. Balancing land, sea, and sky, the composition transforms textile into a wearable canvas."

To see an Indian artist's mind, patience, and skill gracefully sashaying down one of the most photographed red carpets in the world brings immense pride to the entire Indian design community.

Who is Basuri Chokshi?

While her name is now trending globally, Basuri Chokshi is a seasoned name in the luxury design space in India. Her expertise isn't limited to fabrics; she works across diverse surfaces including canvas, wood, veneer, and walls.

Before making waves at Cannes, her bespoke artistic touch had already graced the private residences of major icons, including Nita Ambani, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, and Nayanthara, alongside collaborations with top-tier designers like Rooshad Shroff and Ravi Vazirani.

The Design Dhaga Take: The Rise of Wearable Art

At Design Dhaga, we have always believed that clothes should tell a story. In an era dominated by fast fashion and machine-generated prints, Alia Bhatt’s Cannes look is a beautiful reminder of the irreplaceable value of human touch, consistency, and patience.

When an outfit is hand painted, it carries the breath, time, and emotion of the artisan. It shifts the narrative from mere "clothing" to a heritage piece.

Alia’s gown proves that India’s artistic capabilities extend far beyond traditional motifs; our contemporary artists can take global inspirations and paint them onto textiles with unparalleled finesse.
